Jenkintown Golf League - In Memoriam
Mort French (September 1, 1965 - April 13, 2021)
Mort was a loving, proud father to his four daughters, Sydney, Olivia, Simone, and Matilda. He was a faithful brother and son and a loyal friend. Mort was a chronically late (despite his crazy driving!) Grateful Dead enthusiast with a passion for grilling massive amounts of meat for very late night dinners. Mort danced bare foot at weddings, swam wherever he could, enjoyed trap shooting and golf and, for some unknown reason, was a Minnesota Vikings fan. Mort loved spending time with his daughters, no matter what they were doing. Mort was born in Wynnewood, PA on September 1, 1965 and attended Canterbury High School in Connecticut. He went to The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC before transferring to Boston University and graduating in 1988. He worked in the plastics industry for many years in his family business before striking out on his own with Centric Plastics.
Mort joined the Jenkintown Golf League in 2014, serving as either a full-time player or as an alternate up to his passing. Mort was quick with a joke and embodied the “lightheartedness” that the Jenkintown Golf League was founded on. Mort will be missed.
John Haasz (March 3, 1967 - July 7, 2025)
John was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 164. Over his 33-year career, he led large projects as a General Superintendent, constructing and renovating some of the most well-known structures and institutions in Philadelphia, including Temple University's Morgan Hall, The Ayer condominiums on Washington Square, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). John backpacked through Europe, Australia, South America and Africa, successfully summitting the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro on September 28, 2008. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, and family and never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers. He coached his kids youth teams. Many of the children he coached still called him Coach.
John was the beloved husband of Lisa (Rainey) Haasz and devoted father to Alex, David and MaryKate. He was their protector, their anchor and their biggest supporter in all things. Family always came first for John in every decision he made and every action he took.
John joined the Jenkintown Golf League in 2017 first as an alternate and then as a full-time player. John always had a smile on his face, oftentimes with his signature “plastic filtered cigar.” John fought his illness with dignity, often playing while he was sick. He was an inspiration to us all. In 2022 while John was going through treatment, John’s son Alex finished his season in dedication to his Dad. John will be missed.
